EDUCATION
Ms. Underwood attended both college and law school in her home town of New York City. She graduated with a Bachelor of Arts, in Economics, from New York University (NYU) in New York, New York, and went on to receive her Juris Doctor, from Brooklyn Law School, in Brooklyn, New York. After law school, Ms. Underwood decided to pursue a career in public service and moved to Los Angeles, California.
BACKGROUND
Ms. Underwood was admitted to the State Bar of California in 1988. She was quickly hired in the Office of the District Attorney, for the State of California, County of Los Angeles, where she would work as a Deputy District Attorney for ten years. Ms. Underwood’s accomplishments for the County of Los Angeles included prosecuting complex felony cases including environmental crimes, consumer fraud, sexual assault, domestic violence, narcotics offenses, and workers’ compensation fraud, in addition to other general felonies. In prosecuting workers’ compensation fraud, for the County of Los Angeles, Ms. Underwood focused on cases involving individual workers, medical providers, and attorney fraud.
Ms. Underwood decided in 1999 to join the private sector and dedicate her skills and knowledge full time to workers’ compensation defense throughout California. She has ever since successfully served all manner of stakeholders for the defense inclusive of representing major insurance carriers, third party administrators, public and private self-insured employers, public entities and municipalities, and has further developed expertise in handling CIGA cases, statewide on behalf of liquidated carriers, for the California Insurance Guarantee Association.
Ms. Underwood has throughout the course of her career engaged in pro bono activities. When not practicing law, she is a dedicated patron of the arts and enjoys museums, architecture, music, literature, and attending live theatre, inclusive of both Broadway (over 500 seats) or Off-Broadway (100 to 499 seats) productions, with friends and family.
